Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus

Description

Provide candidates with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of safety procedures and precautions necessary before and during excavation work.

Who Should Attend?

Personnel engaged in the excavation of groundworks.

Course Content

Candidates will engage in theory lessons, enhanced by the use of overhead projectors (OHP) and videos. The training will cover:

 

  • Interpretation of utility maps
  • Symbols used by utility companies on maps
  • Transferring information from maps
  • Review of HSG 47 – Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
  • Common types of underground apparatus
  • Support of apparatus in open excavations
  • Use of cable and pipe locators

Knowledge

  • Training Objectives:
    • Select Typical Site Plans: Understand and choose appropriate site plans for excavation work.
    • Identify Underground Apparatus: Recognize and locate various types of underground infrastructure.
    • Use Pipe and Cable Locators: Operate locators to detect and trace underground pipes and cables accurately.

Qualifications Obtained

SWQR Card: A SWQR card, valid for 5 years, will be awarded to individuals who successfully complete the NRSW assessments.

Entry Requirements

 

  • A good understanding of spoken and written English is required.
  • Only candidates with relevant experience should attend, as this is an assessment or test.
