N402: Slinger / Signaller

Description

This course is to provide a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their
responsibilities as a Slinger / Signaller

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for both experienced operators and novices.

Course Content

Be able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to
relevant regulations and legislation.

Be able to locate, identify and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting
accessories. Explain their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions.

Be able to interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation.

Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non serviceable items.

Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service.

Identify and explain centres of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads.

Set up exclusion zone explaining actions required for emergency actions, identifying any
overhead hazards.

Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for Slinger / Signaller use.

Secure various types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and
procedures ensuring load balance, security and integrity.

Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of location using different
methods of communication.

Environmental considerations.

Carry out all out of service and securing procedures.

Knowledge

A good understanding of spoken, reading, and writing English.

Qualifications Obtained

NPORS Card – route dependant.

Entry Requirements

We will carry out a profile assessment to determine the duration of training required for those with limited or no experience.

Location

Training can be conducted onsite or at the Bridgend Training Facility.

Existing NPORS Card Holder – No (S)NVQ Held

For operators who do not currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ, a Trained Operator card will be issued, which is valid for two years from the date of application.
During this two-year period, operators will be required to register for and achieve the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their Trained Operator card.

Existing NPORS Card Holder – (S)NVQ Held

Operators who currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their NPORS card will be issued a Competent Operator card, valid for five years from the date of application.
Operators in receipt of the Competent Operator card will also be issued a CPD record/operator logbook. This will serve as an ongoing record of that operator’s continuous professional development and their operating hours in the workplace.

NPORS (Traditional) Operator Card

For those who operate in industry sectors other than construction and are not subject to the requirement to hold an operator card bearing the CSCS logo, NPORS has retained its traditional operator card.
The standards applied to this route and the methods of achievement are exactly the same as those applied to the NPORS / CSCS operator card route. However, the NPORS traditional card does not bear the CSCS logo, as non-construction industry sectors generally do not have the same requirements as the construction sector, i.e., trained operator card – VQ achievement – competent operator card.
End users have the option to select three or five-year registrations for this card, depending on any sector-specific or in-company requirements.

N.B. For those operating in the construction sector, the NPORS / CSCS card route should be followed.
